AS-3 'Cash Flow Statements' and Ind AS 7 require classification of cash flows into Operating, Investing and Financing activities. Direct method (operating section) presents major classes of gross cash receipts and payments — sales, supplier payments, employees, taxes; gives clearer information but rarely used. Indirect method starts with profit before tax and adjusts for non-cash items (depreciation, provisions), working capital changes (debtors, creditors, inventory) and items relating to investing/financing.
